Speech Language Therapist

• We are looking for someone to join our acute adult inpatient Speech- language Therapy team on a permanent full time basis.
• The successful candidate will work predominately in acute stroke, neurology and rehabilitation on Taiao Ora/ Ward 51 at Auckland City Hospital.
• As this is an acute inpatient team role, it is a fast-paced style of working requiring flexibility, adaptability and the willingness to flex into other acute specialist areas at Auckland Hospital based on clinical demand.
• You will be provided with regular supervision and continuing professional development. You will also receive regular support from your senior colleagues, Clinical Lead and Professional Leader.

About the Role

We are looking for New Zealand registered Speech-language Therapist to join our dedicated and supportive Adult Speech-language Therapy team at Auckland City Hospital. This is a Permanent, full-time role, working 40 hours per week. This role is based within the speciality of acute stroke, neurology and rehabilitation in Taiao Ora/ Ward 51 at Auckland City Hospital, however flexibility is required based on clinical demand. Applicants must have a passion for working in rehabilitation.

You will join an excellent team of Speech-language Therapists, delivering high quality evidence based clinical care. You will assess and manage both communication and swallowing disorders due to a variety of conditions in an acute setting, provide rehabilitation, and have the opportunity to develop your skills in the use of FEES and video fluoroscopy.

You will work alongside your wider Allied Health colleagues (including Therapy Assistants) within a multidisciplinary team on the wards to deliver high quality, effective services for our population.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Speech-language Therapy team is part of the larger Allied Health team in Clinical Support Services, based at Auckland City Hospital. The acute Speech-language Therapy teamwork across a range of specialist areas including stroke, neurology, rehabilitation, respiratory, general medicine, oncology, haematology, neurosurgery, and older person’s health. The team work alongside two other Speech-language Therapy subservices, Critical Care and ORL, in a range of extended scope of practice areas including FEES, VFSS, SVR and tracheostomy management. This role is based at Auckland City Hospital.

About you

As the ideal person for this role, you will have the following skills and attributes:

• Bachelor’s qualification in Speech Language Therapy or equivalent.
• Registered member of the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association (NZSTA) with current Annual Practicing Certificate
• Experience of 1-2 years working as a Speech-language Therapist in a hospital setting desirable, with experience in stroke, neurology or rehabilitation a plus
• Experience working with the assessment and management of communication impairment and swallowing disorders including previous exposure to FEES and VFSS
• Sound clinical decision-making skills and use of evidence-based practice
• An understanding of bicultural issues and commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi
• Ability to work collaboratively with a range of professional groups in a multidisciplinary setting
• Effective time management, prioritisation and organisational skills
• Drive, energy and initiative with excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
• A team player, with the ability to be flexible and adapt, working well in a fast-paced setting
